Microsoft offers Fix It tool for serious IE8 security issue

Microsoft offers Fix It tool for serious IE8 security issueMicrosoft is offering a Fix It tool for concerned users of Internet Explorer 8 that addresses a security vulnerability being exploited in the wild.

The flaw (CVE-2013-1347) was exploited as part of an attack on the U.S. Department of Labor’s website and its users. Visitors who were running the vulnerable Internet Explorer 8 browser had their computers infected with malicious software.

The issue does not affect any other version of Internet Explorer, but many home and business users still run the ageing web browser.

Microsoft has not yet issued a proper patch for the flaw, and so as a temporary fix it is offering concerned users a one-click Fix It tool that you can get at microsoft.com.

BlackBerry Messenger for iOS, Android coming in summer

BlackBerry Messenger for iOS, Android coming in summerBlackBerry has confirmed that its popular BlackBerry Messenger – or BBM – will be available for users of Android and iOS devices this summer.

BBM will be supported on iOS 6 and Android 4.0, or later. It marks a change in BlackBerry’s services strategy, where once BBM was a major drawing factor of BlackBerry devices. Now, with so many former customers using iOS or Android devices, the company is willing to open it up to other platforms allowing those lost customers to keep in touch with their old BBM contacts.

“For BlackBerry, messaging and collaboration are inseparable from the mobile experience, and the time is definitely right for BBM to become a multi-platform mobile service. BBM has always been one of the most engaging services for BlackBerry customers, enabling them to easily connect while maintaining a valued level of personal privacy. We’re excited to offer iOS and Android users the possibility to join the BBM community,” said Andrew Bocking, Executive Vice President, Software Product Management and Ecosystem, at BlackBerry.

BBM has more than 60 million monthly active customers, with more than 51 million people using BBM an average of 90 minutes per day. BBM customers collectively send and receive more than 10 billion messages each day, almost half of which are read within 20 seconds of being received.

BBM’s move to iOS and Android relies on approval from Apple’s App Store and Google Play.

Netflix to lose large amount of titles this month

Netflix to lose large amount of titles this monthInstantwatcher, a company that catalogs Netflix’s streaming catalog says the site will lose almost 1800 titles in May.

All 15 seasons of South Park are set to disappear as are some older films like Goldfinger and Dr. No. Netflix’s current licensing deals with MGM and Warner Bros. and some other studios are set to expire.

The drop will be the largest since Netflix’s deal with Starz expired last year, but many of the movies in this case are on the older side.

Netflix had this to say (via Verge): “The vast majority of the titles that expire on Wednesday are older features that were aggregated by Epix. We recently added many great, more recent titles such as ParaNorman (Universal), Hunger Games (Epix), Safe (Epix) and Bachelorette (Weinstein). Tomorrow we will also add MI:2, among many other titles.

Netflix is a dynamic service, we constantly update the TV shows and movies that are available to our members. We will add more than 500 titles May 1, but we also have titles expiring, this ebb and flow happens all the time.”

Nexus 5 to focus on camera and battery life?

Nexus 5 to focus on camera and battery life?According to sources, Google will use the Nexus 5 to focus on the camera and battery life, not continuing the ongoing race to have the biggest, largest resolution display.

If the rumors are accurate, the company will keep a 720p IPS display instead of moving to a 5-inch 1080p OLED like rivals. The display will be 4.5-inches but 88 percent of the front will be the screen, meaning the bezel will be almost non-existent. The phone will have the extremely powerful Snapdragon 600 and 3GB RAM, giving it otherwise high-end specs.

In regards to the camera, the flagship will include a Nikon branded 9-megapixel triple prism sensor, which would likely be the best camera ever in a smartphone but much slower than CMOS sensors.

Additionally, the phone will have a 2800 mAH battery, which could lead to some of the best battery life this side of the Droid Maxx.

WhatsApp expanding subscription model to iOS

WhatsApp expanding subscription model to iOSWhatsApp, the popular cross-market mobile messaging application, has announced it will be expanding its annual subscription model to iOS.

Currently, the app has a one-time $1 upfront fee for iOS. On Android, the app is free but the service costs $1 per year. The same goes for BlackBerry and Windows Phone.

“We’re relaxed on dates, but definitely this year. It’s on the road map,” Jan Koum, WhatsApp’s CEO, said in an interview.

WhatsApp has over 130 million users, and 17 billion messages are sent and received daily, making it hugely popular, especially within Android.

When asked if the company is working on a desktop version of the service, Koum says they are not. “We get that question asked a lot. We feel strongly that the world is moving to mobile and [so] we want to be mobile-only. Your phone is with you all the time, and desktop is to many becoming a secondary experience. [So] our answer is no, not anytime soon.”

Netflix: Expect 4k streaming within two years

Netflix: Expect 4k streaming within two yearsNetflix chief product officer Neil Hunt has said today that he expects the company to offer 4K streaming within two years.

The company is committed to the standard, despite its large bandwidth needs.

Hunt says streaming will be the first arena for 4K, rather than in disc form: “That’s because of the challenges involved in upgrading broadcast technologies and the fact that it isn’t anticipated within the Blu-ray disc standard. Clearly, we have much work to do with the compression and decode capability, but we expect to be delivering 4K within a year or two with at least some movies.”

The exec also notes that House of Cards, the company’s original show starring Kevin Spacey, is filmed in 4K.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is official with 5-inch 1080p display, 13MP camera, Cat 3 LTE, eye-tracking features

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is official with 5-inch 1080p display, 13MP camera, Cat 3 LTE, eye-tracking featuresSamsung unveiled its highly-anticipated flagship, the Galaxy S4, during a long and extremely strange event in NYC tonight.

While there was little announced that had not already been leaked in the past few weeks, the company’s latest includes a number of very innovate new features including eye tracking.

From a design standpoint, the phone looks almost identical to the Galaxy S III, except with a larger screen.

As expected, the phone has a 5-inch 1080p super AMOLED display with 441ppi. The screen is also protected by Corning’s latest Gorilla Glass 3 and can be used with gloves thanks to “mitten tech.” Under the hood the phone is powered by a Samsung Exynos 5 (international) or Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro (North America), has 2GB RAM, 16-64GB of internal storage, a microSD slot, a removable 2600 mAh battery, 100 Mbps Cat 3 LTE, Bluetooth 4.0 and 802.11ac Wi-Fi. The device also has an IR blaster, turning it into a full remote control. The device is a thin 7.9mm.

The rear camera is 13-megapixel camera while the front camera is 2-megapixels. One feature Samsung touted was its “Dual Camera” mode, which allows you to take shots with the front and back at the same time and then integrate both into a single scene.

Samsung says the phone will launch with Android 4.2.2, with the company’s own TouchWiz UX overlay. A few of the highly touted eye-tracking features include “Smart Pause,” which pauses video you are watching when you look away (resuming when you look back) and “Smart Scroll,” which allows you to move through your emails or a web page just through your eye movements.

Adding to the plethora of new features, Samsung showed off S Voice Drive (voice commands while driving), Optical Reader (an OCR scanner for business cards including actions such as translation), WatchOn (for turning the phone into a live guide for TV viewing), and S Health (a full fitness tracker).

Starting next month, the phone will be available on 327 mobile operators. There was no word on price.
